Let’s say it again: start with the need

Doing some reading today and nodding my head at Don Clark’s website on Instructional System Design. Love his message that projects needs to ‘start with the end in mind’ (the business need).  Once there is clarity on the need, the next phase is to articulate the performance outcomes that will achieve the need (the things people will do).  Then comes the next phase of planning a training experience for the relevant individuals to enable them to attain and demonstrate the desired performance outcomes.  So we have 1) Business Need > 2) Defined Performance Outcomes (observable) > 3) A Training Strategy & Plan.

Certainly makes sense to spend time getting the starting point right.  To even have the need expressed as some kind of metric.
